JesusFreak20: Colored People

I’d like to draw my readers’ collective attention to the following post from the decentchristiantalk blog:

JesusFreak20: Colored People.

It thoughtfully recognizes the song “Colored People,” from dcTalk’s legendary album JESUS FREAK (now 20 years old!)  with the merit it deserves within the historical context of the mid-90’s. It’s worth the read.

“Just Between You And Me” was a breakthrough, crossover hit on mainstream radio in 1996 for Kevin Max, Toby McKeehan (TobyMac), and Michael Tait (Newsboys) of dcTalk. The song played a significant role in propelling the JESUS FREAK album to double-platinum sales and legendary status within the realm of Christian music. The video for the song received major airplay on MTV and VH1 as well. The song showcases a perfect vocal blend of Max and Tait that, clearly, couldn’t help, but, to be recognized by the world at large, regardless of the Christian music classification.

There has been no lack of critical acclaim for the 1995 dcTalk album JESUS FREAK. Grammy Award winner for Best Rock Gospel Album, JESUS FREAK reached No.16 on the Billboard 200, was certified gold within 30 days of its release, and eventually went on to be certified double platinum. There are multiple worthy candidates on the album from which to select as possible favorites, but, the one I’ve chosen to feature here is carried by the strength of Max’s performance in the second verse and in the latter half of the track as the intensity of the song builds. Within the vocal chemistry of dcTalk, TobyMac and current Newsboys lead singer Michael Tait more than amply fulfilled their roles in providing the rap and soul elements, but, clearly, it was Max’s voice that allowed the music of dcTalk to sore to new heights in terms of artistry and a sound that nobody else had then or has now.
